Photo Assistant, BACKPACKER, AIM Outdoor Group

BACKPACKER magazine is seeking to hire a full-time Photo Assistant to fulfill images needs for BACKPACKER's print and digital media. 

Candidates should have previous experience in a photo department and thorough knowledge of Mac operating system. They must be extremely organized, flexible, and able to multi-task while maintaining attention to detail.

Overall the duties are photo research, preparation and styling for product shoots, and administrative details.

Job Responsibilities -- Specific duties include but are not limited to:
-  Assist the Senior Associate Photo Editor with all photo department responsibilities
-  Edit incoming submissions to select the most beautiful, inspirational, and relevant images to match the locations in the text
-  Research beyond the traditional sources for photos (beyond stock agencies and photographers to: bloggers, hiking clubs, park/forest offices).
-  Research accurate and specific information for captions to provide the editors
-  Enter credits into layouts
-  Request and meticulously prepare hi-res images for the production department
-  Communicating with companies about PR photo needs
-  Photo shoot pre-production, calling in products, assisting in styling
-  Teaching photo department procedures to interns
-  Work with editors and interns on web production to attach photos to articles online
-  Communicate and assist other Outdoor Group titles with photo inquiries?

Minimum Job Qualifications:
-  Proficient in Adobe CS4, including Photoshop, Bridge and InDesign
-  Be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team
-  Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
-  Be enthusiastic, reliable, eager to learn, and have a positive attitude

Desired Qualifications:
-  Familiarity with National Parks and other natural places
-  Relationships with and/or knowledge of individual nature photographers and their archives
-  Familiarity with the outdoor adventure culture

Production Manager

Production Manager We seek an experienced, dynamic, high energy, organized, hands-on production manager to oversee and handle the complete manufacturing and production process of ASPEN magazine. Responsibilities include: overseeing the production process for all our publications, 6 issues of ASPEN and 2 brand extensions of Guide and special issues and promotional/marketing materials; the creation and monitoring of all schedules (print and web), working with printers and outside vendors, including liaising with pre-press, printing and other paper vendors for quality control. Must have good people and problem-solving skills in dealing with advertiser inquiries, requests, and ensure with account executives that all contractual obligations for advertising positioning are met. Reporting directly to Business Manager, you are responsible for procurement and analysis of bids, contract negotiations, maintenance of established budgets and cost controls, coordinating with editorial, art and advertising sales staffs, and management of freelance production staff when required. Some layout and design work. This individual must have strong managerial skills, the ability to multitask, the capacity to work under pressure, a comprehensive understanding of magazine/web publishing. and the ability to work closely with all members of the management team. Must have production experience and advanced knowledge of pre-press, composition, printing, binding, color separation, proofing, paper and extensive experience with In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop.
