Creative Director, Fortune

Fortune has long been the leading magazine for business. When it was conceived by Henry Luce in 1929, most of the existing business press consisted of gray pages filled with words and numbers. Luce wanted his new magazine not only to have great journalism, but to be beautiful. When he presented his idea to the Time Inc. board, he quoted Leonardo da Vinci: "The eye giveth to man a more perfect knowledge than doth the ear." Consequently, Luce said. "the new magazine will be as beautiful a magazine as exits in the United States." The early Fortune covers were exquisite works of art, crafted by the likes of Diego Rivera, and printed on oversized cream-colored paper. In the early days, its photography editor was the famous Walker Evans, and his photographers included Margaret Bourke-White. Fortune captured the fierce beauty of industrial America with all of its shortcomings, which were particularly evident in the first decade of the magazine's existence. Today, that proud legacy is in need of a reboot. The world of business is in the midst of a new industrial revolution, driven by unprecedented changes in technology. The rapid advance of mobile and cloud computing, connected devices, big data, artificial intelligence and advanced robotics and drones, as well as the relentless globalization of business, call for a new visual language to convey Fortune's essential message to business. It needs to inspire as well as inform; enlighten as well as educate; delight as well as describe. We need to convey a sense of urgency to our readers, making Fortune a must-read - something they need in order to succeed in business. The job: The design director will help develop that imagery, first leading a redesign of the magazine, then helping to carry that visual language through to Fortune's other platforms, including digital, video and live. He or she will have to do that while continuing to manage the daily operations of the art and graphics staff, and produce 16 magazines (one a month, plus four special issues) a year. You will: Oversee the art direction of all Fortune products Manage a staff of roughly 5 people, and the budget for art Work collaboratively with editors, photographers, and illustrators Work with the digital designers, conference designers and advertising designers to ensure a consistent look and feel to all Fortune products. You must demonstrate: Significant magazine design experience An ability to create the imagery that will capture the new reality of business An ability to collaborate with others An ability to work calmly on deadlines An ability to manage staff and budget. A hands-on work ethic. You need to be tactical as well as conceptual, willing to get down and dirty into the details of production.
