A New Indie Mag for TV Lovers

A New Indie Mag for TV Lovers

Love magazines? Tick. Love television? Tick. Then new indie television magazine sixteenbynine might be perfect for you (plus, it looks ace). Gym Class's Steven Gregor spoke with the editor Cal King for SPD.

Congrats on the magazine, Cal. Why start a magazine about television?
Thanks! I've always had a slightly obsessive passion for both independent magazines and television (I've been known to demolish six-season boxsets in an obscenely short time), so it seemed like a fairly inevitable coming-together. I'd been watching the blossoming indie mag scene and waiting patiently for one about television to come along, but when that didn't happen I thought I'd test the waters with sixteenbynine

Happy Valentine's Day from The New Yorker

Happy Valentine's Day from The New Yorker

A beautifully-designed Valentine's Day cover used to be an annual event for many magazines. Today, with the exception of an occasional women's service mag, Valentine's Day has almost disappeared from the newsstands. Thank goodness for The New Yorker, which has done brilliantly illustrated Valentine's Day covers for over 70 years. This year, because of their publishing schedule, The New Yorker skipped Valentine's Day and did their annual Eustace Tilley readers' submssion cover. We missed their Valentine's cover, so we collected 19 of their greatest here to warm your hearts and the hearts of your loved ones.

Thanks to Linda Rubes for her help in compiling this collection.

Happy Earth Day! The Greatest Environmental Magazine Covers

April 22 is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, which was first held in 1970. Earth Day was conceived and organized by Wisconsin US Senator Gaylord Nelson. We've collected 11 of the greatest Earth Day and environmental action magazine covers, from 1970-present.

(Above): Ramparts, April 1970. Art director: Jerelle Kraus; illustrator: Jerelle Kraus. This was one of the very first magazine covers with an environmental activist image. It was published to coincide with the first Earth Day.
