Next Pub(lications) Crawl: May 1

Want a sneak peak into the real world of magazine design? Then make sure you come to our Pub(lications) Crawl event on Friday, May 1. We're still working on the details, so keep checking back here to find out which magazines/companies will be offering up tours of their offices, as well as RSVP info. But for now, mark those calendars!

FYI: More Spring Events

Thanks again to everyone who participated in our SPD U event! Now we've got a few other events in the works for the next few months.

First up is another full day of office tours: our semi-annual Pub(lications) Crawl event will be happening at the end of April/beginning of May. We're still finalizing the date, so keep checking back here for that info.

After that, we'll have another evening of Portfolio Reviews in early June. So whether you want feedback on your polished book or whether you've just got a stack of printouts and tearsheets, you should plan on coming for some great individualized advice.

And of course in the meantime, keep an eye on our blog here for the announcement of the winners in our Student Design Competition.

Have any questions, suggestions or comments about our events, membership or anything else? Email us at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com.

Are You A Fan?

Did you attend our SPD U March (Design) Madness event on Monday? Then fill out our survey here. And thanks for coming!

If you were there and gave us your email address for our mailing list, you should have received an email from us about the survey. If you haven't gotten it, please email us at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com so we can make sure we have the right address.

And the Crowd Goes Wild!

A HUGE thanks to all our "all-star" speakers and staffers at yesterday's SPD U March (Design) Madness event! It was a great success, thanks to everyone who attended.

For those of you who couldn't join us, we're hoping to post some video of it here soon, so keep an eye out for that.

And now, let's do the wave and give a thunderous round of applause to our speakers Courtney Brown (Real Simple Creative Studio), Darren Cox (Spotco), Michele Ervin (Popular Mechanics), Samantha Grass (Food Network Magazine), Mike Ley (Field & Stream), Shane Luitjens (INK Publishing), Nathalie Kirsheh (W), Andy Omel (Condé Nast Traveler), Paul Shrynemakers (Rodale), and Stephen Sullivan (freelance photographer), tour-givers David Schlow and the People staff, Kristin Fitzpatrick and the Marie Claire staff, and Nancy Campbell and the Symphony Publishing staff. And last but not least, super-big thanks to our coordinators and support staff Leah Bailey, Kimberly Sall, Emily Smith and Nancy Stamatopoulos.

Mark Your Calendars: Mar. 16

So the deadline for our Student Design Competition has passed, and we're busy unpacking and organizing your entries for our panel of judges. Keep an eye on the blog as we release details about the winners in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, we're also gearing up for our next event, a series of presentations from some of the coolest designers out there: Monday, March 16 from 12:30-5pm in the afternoon. We're still tweaking the details, but we'll have a career advice panel, a design-tips-and-tricks presentation and speakers on photo shoots and inspiration. So keep checking back to find out how to attend.

Today. 5pm.

Yes, even with the snowstorm here in NYC, your Student Design Competition entry(ies) should be in our office today by 5pm. At this point obviously the U.S. Postal Service and FedEx and UPS and all those lovely services will not be of help. But you can use your own 2 snowbooted-feet (or a messenger service) to deliver them directly to us. We are located at 27 Union Square West, Suite 207, right beside the Coffee Shop restaurant.

Not in the area and just learning about our competition? At this point you'll have to wait for next year, but don't forget our upcoming Student PHOTO Competition ... all the details for that are here.
