SEEK and Ye Shall Learn

SEEK and Ye Shall Learn

If you're in the Chicago area, you should definitely consider attending the SEEK Design Conference on November 20. Run by the Visual Communication students at Northern Illinois University, the one-day conference gives students a great opportunity to meet and learn from a great roster of design professionals. While there's no focus on editorial design specifically, looks like a great chance to get good advice and insight on design in general.

Does your school host a similar event? Let us know at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com.

Up Close with Our 2010 Honorable Mention

We're taking a look back at this past year's Student Design Competition winners to see if their work and insight can give you a little inspiration to start your own entries for this year's competition.

Nicole Zigmont, now a recent grad from the Rochester Institute of Technology, merited an Honorable Mention prize with her entry, winning her an internship at Complex magazine this summer. Once again, self-created illustrations caught our judges' attention, along with her fun sense of typography. Read on to see more of her entry and to hear how she did it. And then get your brain going to create your entry! … MORE

What Magazine Personality Will YOU Be for Halloween?

Our friends over at Ed2010 are hosting a Halloween party tomorrow night here in NYC, and you're encouraged to dress up as a well-known magazine staffer. Obviously there will be at least several Anna Wintour's there, but will anyone dress up as one of our beloved Art Directors? If you attend, report back on who you go as, and who you see!
#24: Both Parties Should Be Happy

#24: Both Parties Should Be Happy

Art is like masturbation. It is selfish and introverted and done for you and you alone. Design is like sex. There is someone else involved, their needs are just as important as your own, and if everything goes right, both parties are happy in the end.

We're taking a closer look at this past year's Student Design Competition winners in order to give you a little motivation for this year's competition.

Now a recent grad from Ball State University, Kyle Lewis was our second-place winner in last year's competition. Like with our first-place winner, his smart self-created illustrations, a great sidebar and a well-designed second spread helped him win a $1,000 prize and the Adobe Creative Suite. (He also won an internship at an NYC magazine, but wisely turned it down for a real PAYING job.) Click through for his 2nd spread and more details.

Lorem ipsum dolizzle fo shizzle

If you're entering our Student Competition or doing any kind of editorial design project, you're likely going to need some Lorem Ipsum (don't know what that is? click here). Well, leave the boring old faux-Latin version behind, and coolify your layouts with Gangsta Lorem Ipsum.

Thanks to SwissMiss for the find.

#23: Pay Attention to What Is There

Good Advice: Know the Product You Are Pitching To

The talented folks at Wonderful Machine (they represent select photographers) did a great Q&A with James Mullinger, Photo Editor at GQ magazine. Whether you're looking to become an art director, a photo editor or a photographer, it's a very worthwhile read about what he looks for in potential photographers. Perhaps the best piece of advice for all of us, whether applying for a design job or trying to get illustration or photography work:
What annoys you the most? Photographers sending in grossly inappropriate work for us to see. Look at the magazine before you send your work in. If you can see it on the pages of GQ, we'd love to hear from you. Otherwise don't bother. Know and understand the product you are pitching to.

Magazine Cover Design

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) recently named the winners in their 2010 Best Cover of the Year competition. You can see what won and the other finalists here. But perhaps the more interesting part is the stories behind the covers. In their Cover Gallery here, you'll learn why certain photographs were used, how the photographer worked with the subject and more about the ideas behind the images. It's some great insight into some great design.
