Up Close with Our 2010 Third-Place Winner

Up Close with Our 2010 Third-Place Winner In order to celebrate the opening of our 2011 Student Design Competition, we're looking back at this past year's winners.

Derek Eng, now in his senior year at Ontario College of Art and Design, was our third-place winner. A smart headline treatment and visually-exciting second spread helped him win a $500 prize, the Adobe Creative Suite and an internship at W magazine. Read on for more info and to see his second-spread.

What was your inspiration in creating your entry?
I'm a huge fan of magazines that have articles in which the photographs ARE the story, so I wanted this design to have lots of photos that are both visually appealing and informative. Equally inspiring was the possibility of interning at a magazine in New York and meeting famous magazine art directors at the SPD Awards Gala.

What was the biggest challenge in creating your entry?
The second spread... arranging the many photos, columns of text, maps, sidebar and pullquote to create a dynamic layout that was still easy to read and follow.

Do you participate in any publication- or design-related campus activities?
Does picking the brain of my wonderful editorial design teacher Karen Simpson count?

What are your favorite magazines?
GQ, More, W, Time, ESPN The Magazine, Wired, Condé Nast Portfolio, Esquire, Report On Business, French Vogue, DestinAsian (anything by Tom Brown actually) and all Martha Stewart publications, past and present, especially Martha Stewart Living and Kids.

What was your favorite part of your internship at W?
Being able to brag about working at such a great magazine in such an incredible city!
