Smart Quote #42: Dream Jobs

Smart Quote #42: Dream Jobs

... don't wait to get assigned your "dream job", it may never happen. Assign yourself, and go and do it. I fully appreciate this can be expensive, but you have to find a way. I am always asking favors of people, and seeing how I can cut corners to save money. Some friends will work for you for free. Your excitement is contagious. But clients are unlikely to assign you work if you can't show them you've already done it. The good idea is hugely important in all this.

If you're stuck and in need of some creative inspiration, check out Word As Image, by Ji Lee. A tried and true project done by most every designer during their sophomore year, each image is made out of a word, using only the letters in the word itself, and only the graphic elements of the letters. No outside elements are allowed! Check out the cool video, which pushes the concepts further by adding motion. Have any particular favorites? Post a comment to let us know! Mine are elevator, fast food, and Dali.--Joseph Caserto

Be the Best Intern Ever!

Be the Best Intern Ever!

Today's post comes to you from one of our newest Student Outreach Committee members, Nicole Zigmont, Assistant Designer at Family Circle. You might remember her from last year's March Madness event or from her honorable mention in 2010's Student Design Competition. Thanks to her awesome interning and working experiences, she's got great advice for those of you interning or starting entry-level jobs:

Since I've been working as a full time designer for over a year, I am really understanding the flip side of the work relationship between interns and the art department. Interns are not only here to gain professional experience, but they are essentially becoming key members of the magazine.

Here are some examples of what you may end up doing as a design intern and how much your contributions are impacting the art department:

Will You Be Our Next Winner?

Will You Be Our Next Winner?

Who will join the ranks of our elite SPD Student Design Competition winners? It could be you!

We've had winners from all over the country and even outside the U.S., from small private art schools to large public universities. And a lot of them have gone on to successful careers in the magazine world thanks in part to the exposure the competition has given them ... and many of those weren't even first-place winners. So in addition to all the awesome prizes you could win (money! an internship! Adobe Creative Suite!), simply getting your work in front of our awesome panel of judges is a prize you get just for entering!

So get those entries in by this Monday, the 12th. And you could see YOUR winning entry amongst the winners above!

P.S. Check out all our past winners on our Facebook photo gallery (with links to their winner Q&As where you may find some valuable tips!).
