Ever looked at a magazine's masthead and wondered just what do all those job titles actually mean? What does a photo producer actually do? Does a deputy art director get a shiny badge? And why are some people creative directors and others design directors?

Our blog series "Five Questions for..." is here to help answer those questions and give you insight into working in the world of publication design. Is there a particular job that you want to know more about? Email us at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com and we'll find an expert who does it. They'll give you their take, and then it's up to you to put their advice to work. Read on to find out what being an Associate Photo Editor is like for Tracey Woods.

Announcing our SPD-U Spotlight Merit Winners!

We finish up with our 2014 SPD-U Spotlight winners today by announcing our Merit Winners over on the SPD-U Tumblr (winners are being posted throughout the morning and will be complete around noon). Be sure to check out their awesome winning designs and portfolio links!

Thanks again to everyone who entered their work! It was a terrific group of entries, making our judges decision a hard one. For those of you still in school, we hope to see your work in the batch of entries next year! We'll release next year's details in April 2015. In the meantime, stay tuned for our annual Student Design Competition which will open early this fall. And follow us online all summer for more great stuff!

As you've seen these past two weeks, we've had some terrific Gold Medal-winning designs in our SPD-U Spotlight Competition. Our impressive team of judges had a super-difficult job choosing the winning work and because the overall work was so strong, we're excited to honor another 13 designs as Silver Medal winners. And tomorrow there's even more as we announce our Merit Winners over on the SPD-U Tumblr.

SPD-U Spotlight 2014: UPDATE

As stated in the official SPD-U Spotlight Call for Entries, "all winners will be notified by July 1." And as you may have noticed, TODAY is July 1! Well... sadly, we're running a tad behind schedule. So if you haven't heard from us yet, don't despair ... we haven't contacted anyone yet as the judging is not quite complete.

Thanks to all your terrific work, we had more entries than ever before, making our judges' decisions even tougher! But we're ALMOST done, and all winners will be contacted by next Monday, July 7, if not beforehand. We'll then start announcing them and showcasing the work here on the blog soon after. So keep an eye on your mailboxes to see if YOUR work has been chosen. Thanks so much for your patience!
