Good News Procastinators! Our Student Design Competition Deadline is Extended!

Happy Friday to all you procrastinators and those of you just hearing about our SPD-U Student Design Competition ... we're extending our deadline to Monday, March 23!!! So now there's no need for mind-numbing all-nighters or insane FedEx overnight delivery fees ... you've now got TWO EXTRA WEEKS to work on your designs and get them into our office on time!

So to make it official, the new deadline is:
MONDAY, MARCH 23, 2015, 5PM EST

Judging will happen later that week and we'll contact the winners throughout the week of March 30th. Then we'll announce the winners here on the blog and our social media as soon we can in early April.

Have any questions that we haven't answered here or on the main information page here? Emails us at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com and we'll answer them asap.
Student Design Competition Q&A: A Villain in the News Category?

Student Design Competition Q&A: A Villain in the News Category?

Q.jpgI'm interested in entering work in the News Category as described in the Call for Entries, but I'm curious about the subhead. It reads: "He/She has been called every name under the sun. We decided to find out who this so-called villain really is." So does that mean the person I choose to feature has to be seen as a villain character?

SPD-U's First Mini-Pub Crawl Completed!

SPD-U's First Mini-Pub Crawl Completed!

For our first-ever Mini-Pub(lications) Crawl event on February 13, a lucky 10 students got an exclusive presentation and tour of the 9Threads Custom Publishing studio from our wonderful hosts Nancy Campbell and Trevett McCandliss of McCandlissandCampbell (shown in the group photo above, center back).

"We started with a slide presentation and then did a Q&A. The students actually stuck around and chatted with us for a while beyond the original end time ... we are always happy to speak to students!" said Nancy.

Trevett agreed: "It was great! We had fun speaking with the students and showing them our work. It's always a pleasure to do anything with SPD!"

A huge thanks to Nancy and Trevett for hosting us! And also to our awesome SPD-U Tour Guides Adri Ramdeane and Lauren Heffron!!

If you missed this special mini-Pub Crawl, don't worry, we've got more to come! Look for details on the next one to be announced later in March. Again, it'll only be open to a very small group of students, so watch our blog and social media for the information so you can be one of the lucky few to attend!

Student Design Competition Q&A: Can I Change the Headline?

Student Design Competition Q&A: Can I Change the Headline?

Q.jpgAre we required to use the specific headlines you've provided in the Call for Entries? What if I wanted to change it a little? For example, in the Entertainment category, it seems weird not to have the person's name in the headline. Can I use their name instead of "him" or "her"?

So, uh, for this Student Design Competition, where do I get the words to use in my layout? Do I have to write the story myself?

#TBT: SPD-U Throws it Back to 2012 Student Competition Winner Geraldson Chua

50th-Small.jpgAs part of SPD's 50th Anniversary celebration, we're looking back at our past Student Competition winners (see galleries of past winning work here on the blog). A few of them were kind enough to speak with us about what they've been up to since their wins and how the competition affected them. As you can see, they're all quite successful and most are working in magazines. Want to follow their path? Enter THIS year's competition.

In 2012 as part of our 12th Student CompetitionGeraldson Chua won an Honorable Mention for his work as a student at Rutgers University.

From there, he interned at Harpers Bazaar and Seventeen, then eventually left school to work at Esquire before landing at O, The Oprah Magazine where he now serves as Senior Designer. We caught up with him for a few quick words...

Student Design Competition Q&A: What's this

Student Design Competition Q&A: What's this "Made-Up" Character in Your Rules?

Q.jpgI'm interested in entering work in the News Magazine and Entertainment Magazine categories of your Student Design Competition. I noticed in the News category, it says our story can feature a real person or "somebody you've made up." If I want to feature a fictional character that already exists, would that be acceptable?

And in the Entertainment category, it says the person being featured doesn't have to be a "real celebrity" ... can you explain this a little more?
