Third Place

ADAM LEISENRING
SCHOOL: Kutztown University, PA
LEVEL: Junior
INSTRUCTOR: Elaine Cunfer
CATEGORY: How-To magazine

SPD-U: What was your inspiration in creating your entry?
ADAM: When I read the article categories, I thought it would be funny to do a How-To article about something seemingly mundane. I remembered an old movie I saw with my dad recently where one of the characters used the phrase "Go fry an egg". The expression really cracked me up at the time, and when I thought of it later, I knew right away I had my topic.

SPD-U: What was the biggest challenge in creating your entry?
ADAM: The biggest challenge was creating the letters on the first page, which are made with real fried eggs. I worked with my professor in the metal shop to create metal cookie cutter shapes of the letters. I was then able to place them on the frying pan and pour the egg into the shape like a mold. It took a bit of scrambling around at first, but I eventually came up with a system that worked pretty well.

SPD-U: Anything you learned or advice to share for students entering future SPD Student Competitions?
ADAM: My advice would be: take your time and go over every detail, and have other people check out your design too. When you think it's done, give it another once-over.

SPD-U: What's your major/field of study? And do/did you participate in any publication- or design-related campus activities throughout your college years?
ADAM: I'm studying Communication Design at Kutztown University, with a concentration in Illustration and Graphics. This year I was an officer in the KUGA which is a group that organizes events within our major, like speakers and other activities. I'm also an officer in KU's sketchbook club. Being a part of these groups, I have been able to come out of my shell and become a better designer.
