Internship Insight: Bloomberg Businessweek and Syracuse Senior Simon Abranowicz

As many students know, acquiring and experiencing a rewarding internship is no easy feat. You might send out 20 applications and get a response and interview at only a few. After this exhausting process, it quickly becomes clear in the first few days of work if you will be satisfied by the level of creative responsibility. (The reality is that production work and coffee runs may likely be in your future)

Syracuse University senior Simon Abranowicz' experience this past summer at Bloomberg Businessweek was not this typical internship. Enjoy his story and portfolio of (published!) work after the jump. … MORE

Be the Best Intern Ever!

Be the Best Intern Ever!

Today's post comes to you from one of our newest Student Outreach Committee members, Nicole Zigmont, Assistant Designer at Family Circle. You might remember her from last year's March Madness event or from her honorable mention in 2010's Student Design Competition. Thanks to her awesome interning and working experiences, she's got great advice for those of you interning or starting entry-level jobs:

Since I've been working as a full time designer for over a year, I am really understanding the flip side of the work relationship between interns and the art department. Interns are not only here to gain professional experience, but they are essentially becoming key members of the magazine.

Here are some examples of what you may end up doing as a design intern and how much your contributions are impacting the art department:

Intern Tips

If you're just starting a summer internship or about to, check out these great tips from Ed2010's readers on how to get the most out of it. Got any of your own to share? Comment below!

Interning? Win Cash!

Ed2010's Intern Trust Fund awards $1,000 to a few lucky interns. And knowing how most internships don't pay, that could definitely come in handy. The deadline for fall interns is midnight THIS SATURDAY, October 9. Get the application here. Spring interns must apply by Jan. 30th, 2011 and summer interns have a May 30, 2011 deadline.

Looking over all those unpaid for-credit-only internship listings can get depressing if you're a recent grad looking for work. Well, hopefully you frequently check our Job Board here, cause there's one today for a Condé Nast magazine that is full-time, paid AND doesn't require school credit!

Internships: Get 'Em While They're Hot!

So, uhhh, have you guys seen the deluge of cool internships recently posted on our job board? There's even one at Vanity Fair that does NOT require that you get school credit! Better jump on them asap!

How to Deal with that Internship-for-Credit-Only Thing

If you're a recent grad, you may notice there's a lot more internship opportunities than jobs out there right now, but that most of those internships require that you get school credit for it. Even if you're still in school, those extra credits can cost extra money that few of us have these days. So what's an aspiring magazine designer or photo editor to do?

Report from the Frontlines

2008's first-honorable-mention winner Jason Sfetko took a break from his busy internship days at Martha Stewart Living to give you a little glimpse into his summer so far:

Hello. I recently received a SPD student award for my piece on Amy Winehouse. I was extremely excited to win because that meant I'd receive a summer internship at Martha Stewart Living and be one step closer to living my dream as a publication designer.
