Event: SND Student Symposium

Are you anywhere near Syracuse, NY? Then you should attend this Friday's FREE Syracuse Student Symposium, sponsored by the Society of News Designers. Sure it focuses on newspaper design, but as we mentioned before, newspapers and magazines have lots in common when it comes to design. Starting with a free lunch at 1pm, there will be 3 sessions followed up with individual critiques. Professional advice, free admission AND free lunch? Why aren't you registered already?!

And don't forget, we've got our own half-day SPD-U March (Design) Madness event coming up on Monday, March 14 from 1pm to 4pm. So mark your calendars, ask your professors for the day off, and make your travel plans ... it's going to be an awesome event you won't want to miss! Details will be posted soon.
SEEK and Ye Shall Learn

SEEK and Ye Shall Learn

If you're in the Chicago area, you should definitely consider attending the SEEK Design Conference on November 20. Run by the Visual Communication students at Northern Illinois University, the one-day conference gives students a great opportunity to meet and learn from a great roster of design professionals. While there's no focus on editorial design specifically, looks like a great chance to get good advice and insight on design in general.

Does your school host a similar event? Let us know at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com.

Lights, Cameras...

If you a photographer type and are in the NYC area, you should definitely consider attending PDN'S PhotoPlus Expo this week. Students get half off the entry fee, and you can even attend the Expo Hall for free.

There will be tons of great seminars, including several magazine-related ones such as...

What Magazine Personality Will YOU Be for Halloween?

What Magazine Personality Will YOU Be for Halloween?

Our friends over at Ed2010 are hosting a Halloween party tomorrow night here in NYC, and you're encouraged to dress up as a well-known magazine staffer. Obviously there will be at least several Anna Wintour's there, but will anyone dress up as one of our beloved Art Directors? If you attend, report back on who you go as, and who you see!

Lorem ipsum dolizzle fo shizzle

If you're entering our Student Competition or doing any kind of editorial design project, you're likely going to need some Lorem Ipsum (don't know what that is? click here). Well, leave the boring old faux-Latin version behind, and coolify your layouts with Gangsta Lorem Ipsum.

Thanks to SwissMiss for the find.

For All You Ambitious High Schoolers...

The New York Times has teamed up with CUNY's School of Journalism to host a 3-day journalism workshop just for high school students. So if you're in the NYC area and are getting tired of your summer days (haha), consider attending. You'll learn about and get experience in reporting, writing, photography and video (and we can only image a little design will be involved in that!). Takes place next Monday, July 19, thru Wednesday the 21st in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn. Check out all the details here.
Help for Your Identity Crisis

Help for Your Identity Crisis

As a student, you may not yet have proclaimed editorial design as your one true love ... and even those of us who have still have interests beyond the page (or screen these days). These other arenas of graphic design can teach a lot regardless of your final medium, so if you're interested at all in branding and identity (and isn't that what creating a magazine's look is all about?), then check out this new conference from Under Consideration:

An extension of their Brand New blog (check it out if you don't already know it), the Brand New Conference takes place on Nov. 5, 2010, here in NYC, features amazing speakers, and offers you students a 50% discount on the registration!! But you have to act fast, it's limited to only 25 of you. And for those of you unable to make it to the Big Apple, you can attend via webcast for even cheaper! They'll even be selling videos of the event afterward. All the details here.

The Real World: Designer Edition

The Real World: Designer Edition

Sorry, this isn't an audition call for the next installment of the MTV hit. But it's even better:

MyDesignShop.com
(a sister site to HOW, Print and I.D.'s sites) is hosting a live DesignCast seminar on Thursday, December 3. Led by 2 sorta-recent grads who've already had great success (with clients including the aforementioned MTV), you'll get a first-hand account of what the school-to-real world transition is like and how you can best prepare for it. Titled Everything We Didn't Know When We Left School, it should be an enlightening hour. Register here.
