Do You Teach Design? Or Do Occasional Presentations? Know Any Design Students?

Thumbnail image for SPDU_Icon-Small.jpgMaybe you teach, maybe you have some great interns, or are still in contact with your past professors ... if you have any contact with students or college faculty, we here at SPD-U (our student group) could use your help with two of our spring programs:

We're looking to build our roster of speakers for upcoming student events, so whether you teach, do speaker presentations all the time, or simply want to start, we want to hear from you ... email us at spdstudentoutreach@gmail.com.

• Our second project this spring is our 2015 Student Design Competition. If you teach, we'd love for you to consider including the competition as part of your spring syllabus. If you know any design or journalism professors or students who are interested in magazine design, we'd greatly appreciate if you could encourage them to enter. Direct them to the info page here, or share our competition posts from our SPD-U Facebook page and/or Twitter account.

Thanks so much for your time and help as we try to support, educate and showcase the future of our industry.

A Toast to Pub Crawl 2012!

PubCrawl2012-2_thumb_w_580.jpg

SPD-U, our Student Outreach Committee, hosted its annual Pub(lications) Crawl event on Friday, September 28. The day was a huge success, with tours to the offices of Bloomberg Businessweek, The Huffington Post, Inked, Men's Health, People en Español, and Seventeen. Our Pub Crawl students were given their very own first-hand peek at how magazines are made, by the pros who make them.

There are two more exciting offerings for students coming up this month from SPD-U: Design Seventeen, which is a partnership with one of our Pub Crawl hosts, and an Ask The Pros Live panel discussion. Space is very limited, so be sure to register ASAP. Meanwhile, check out some some more of our Pub Crawl tour pictures after the jump.

Portfolio Faux Pas, Part 2

Portfolio Faux Pas, Part 2

The biggest portfolio faux pas is a lack of editing! Don't put anything in your portfolio that you're not truly proud of. It's better to show a smaller tighter body  of work than a larger portfolio that contains work that doesn't speak to your potential. --Gail Bichler, The New York Times Magazine
That's just one piece of awesome portfolio advice you'll get from our expert panel of reviewers in this Thursday's CMYK: Student Portfolio Review event (registration has been extended through Wednesday!). If you're a student in the NYC-area, it's a rare opportunity for hands-on guidance in prepping your portfolio for the real world of interviews, so sign up now!

"Sloppy trimming! Presentation is very important. I recently saw a portfolio that contained ripped out magazine pages that were not AT ALL trimmed. Seriously?" --Alice Alves, Art Director at Fast Company
In anticipation of our upcoming Student Portfolio Review event next Thursday (details here, sign up by Tuesday at 5pm!), we've asked our superstar panel of reviewers for a sneak peak at their awesome advice. Thanks to Alice for her straight-up take on the biggest portfolio mistake she sees.

Ron Gabriel: The (almost) Graduate

Ron Gabriel: The (almost) Graduate

Ron worked as a magazine art director until August 2009, when he left Hearst Magazines to pursue a MFA in Design from the School of Visual Arts. He worked for titles including Seventeen, New Woman, The New York Times Upfront, and CosmoGirl, as well as the international editions of Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar and Esquire. We first hooked up with Ron when he was just beginning his two-year stint as a graduate student in SVA's Designer as Author program, so we wanted to check in again as he prepares to graduate.

The SVA 2010 Yearbook

The SVA 2010 Yearbook

SPD Grids just got its hands on a hot-off-the-presses copy of the 2010 SVA student yearbook. Compiled and designed by faculty advisor/instructor/creative director Genevieve Williams and a top team of seniors, the book is packed with brilliant design and imagery. The yearbook comes in a white box with five books and a DVD inside, all wrapped in a colorful belly band.

We're told that scans from the book will be available online for viewing soon. Check back at this site. In the meantime you can watch a cool animated film starring 2010 SVA seniors here.

Student Photo Competition Winners Announced

The Society is pleased to announce the winners of our first-ever student photo competition. We were thrilled to receive over 250 entries from schools across the country to our Land/Sea/Air contest, and while it took us awhile to get our act together to post the victors (okay, my act), it doesn't take away from just how darn proud we are of our kids.

Back to School

Back to School

I've been teaching at SVA for a really long time. I actually can't even remember how long, but it's got to be at least 16 or 50 years now. Sometimes it's great, and sometimes it's inconvenient. Occasionally, it's incredibly frustrating. But that said, I wouldn't take back the many hours I've invested in the classroom and only wish more designers taught, too. Here's why:
