Thoughts on Democracy

Thoughts on Democracy

By Leslie Dela Vega, Photo Editor, Time

I had arrived at the Miami Intl Airport at midnight on Dec 5th dreading the 3 mile walk from the gate to the taxi stand! I was already half asleep walking into complete humidity thinking NOTHING is going to wake me up for this, as I was trying to keep my head up, I turned slightly to my right and saw a poster that started out with FREEDOM OF SPEECH by Adam Dye. The treatment made it look as if you could just take those letters and peel them right off. (Let me give you a bit of background, I'm a photo editor. But I have always had a great love for type. I took a typography class in art school and collected all the Letrasets I could find when I was kid. All the old schoolers should know that those are.)

Bizarre and Beautiful...

Bizarre and Beautiful...

...was my take on Art Basel Miami this year which I was lucky enough to attend, though I'm still getting used to the 60 degree temperature difference here. If you know nothing or a lot about art, go! Its a huge cross section of painting, sculpture, photography and performance from all around the globe. Like Ina... Get Me Patrick!

Get Me Patrick!

We all remember the scene in, "The Devil Wears Prada" where Meryl Streep, as Anna Wintour yells at her assistant, played by Anne Hathaway, to get Demarchelier on the line, his name being tossed around throughout the film as if he were Madonna or Prince. Well the Musée du Petit Palais did get Patrick, and the result is truly inspiring.

The Flamenco Biennial

The Flamenco Biennial

I was recently in Sevilla, Spain for the Flamenco Biennial and wanted to share some thoughts and photos with you. The city commissioned many artists of different mediums to pay tribute to the history of Flamenco dance and the incredible women who have been involved for many years in keeping it alive. It is a month of poetry, dance, music, photography, painting, etc... It brings the old and new together for a big, well... PARTY.

Paris, Bound

Paris, Bound

If you're lucky enough to get to Paris, wandering along the aged, off-kilter, one-lane sidestreets of Le Marais is an instantly nostalgia-inducing joy.

Sometimes it becomes surreally anachronistic, and the other day, strolling the too-narrow sidewalk of rue de Sévigné, I found myself obstructed by a free-form gaggle of high-school-aged kids doing what high-school-aged kids do, chatting, smoking, flirting, giggling, comparing their discreet ink and timid piercings, and--of course!--singing, in loving harmony, snippets of kitschy American standards of the '40s and '50s.
