Making a Scene

Making a Scene

This Sunday's edition of The New York Times Magazine brings their annual Hollywood Issue,  with black and white portraits shot by Solve Sundsbo -- and, for the first time, accompanied by 14 one-minute videos that each tell their own story, "not only the art, but also the joy and vigor of performance."

Over on the NYT's The Lens Blog, Director of Photography Kathy Ryan gives more detail about the project, saying, "We had to get somewhere really quickly with an impact. And it had to be beautiful."

Like the photo portfolio, the videos were directed by Sundsbo and produced by the photo team at the magazine, including Ryan, Joanna Milter and Miki Meek.

Most tellingly, according to the NYT, "This is the first time that video has been as significant as the print portfolio." Check out all the videos here, and see the photo portraits in this Sunday's copy of The New York Times Magazine.

With over 9,000 views and numerous blog mentions, this video has taken on a life of its own... … MORE

Back To The

Back To The "Drew"ing Board...

In between all the crazy preparation for Gala 44 (and trust me when I say you WON'T want to miss this one,) as a recurring item (and due to popular demand,) here is one of my latest design process vids of an opening spread featuring Drew Barrymore photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott from the April 2009 issue of W magazine. Looking back, I had an idea of where the design would end up, but wanted to explore a few options first.

Saul Bass on His Film Titles

The title says it all. 35 minutes of pure goodness; a little something for your Wednesday.

"Did you try... "

"Maybe you should..."
"{Insert Editor's Name} would like to see..."
"Photo really wants..."

Depending on where you sit in the Art Department, you've either uttered these words, or had them unloaded on you. You probably DID try...or, at least, you THOUGHT about it. But your co-workers want hard proof; I know I certainly do!

And, why is it that, sometimes, the answer is not so clear?
