Design 09.13.17
Atlanta magazine is looking for a Design Director, who will be responsible for the overall look of the Atlanta magazine brand--focusing on print and, to a lesser extent, on digital and social media. S/he will collaborate with, supervise, and inspire a three-person art staff to create a magazine each month that is visually inviting, provocative, sophisticated, and commercial. The design director will touch, directly or indirectly, every edit page of the magazine, from the tiniest photo credit to a 16-page service package stuffed (engagingly) with dozens of elements. Beyond the monthly main magazine, s/he will also oversee the design of our ancillary edit-produced publications, including our quarterly shelter book, HOME magazine.
Job Responsibilities:
• Working with the editor-in-chief to conceive and execute compelling and commercial covers
• Overseeing and implementing any future redesign of the magazine
• Clearly and promptly communicating assignments to contributing photographers, illustrators, and graphic artists
• Using a limited budget in creative ways
• Working closely with different departments to ensure a timely close of each issue
• Finding ways to tell stories graphically and in unconventional and non-linear ways
• Leading brainstorming sessions, suggesting heds and deks, and coming up with story ideas
• Planning, alongside the editor-in-chief and section editors, for future covers and coverage
• Nurturing and cultivating a deep roster of contributing photographers, illustrators, and graphic artists
• Directing photo shoots as appropriate
Job Requirements:
• Good humor, curiosity, flexibility, good humor, superior organizational skills, good humor, the courage to break rules and buck trends, and a compulsion to overcommunicate.
• At least seven years' design experience, preferably in magazines
• Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator CS
• Did we mention good humor?
