The Premiere Issues Archive

The Premiere Issues Archive

Ever wonder what the cover of the first issue of tktktktk magazine was? Wonder no more, thanks to the Premiere Issues archive!

At heart, Premiere Issues is still a carefully curated and presented personal collection. We are still fascinated by the opening statements written by editors and publishers in the launch issue -- amazed at the spirit of their voices and the wholehearted outpouring of their ideas and energy to create their vision.

We encourage you to submit your own first issues; those that have gathered dust in the attic, or that have been freshly printed -- we welcome contributors and readers alike. Thank you for staying with us and hope you will visit often and watch the collection grow.

You Expect Us to Read, Too? Rrrrghh

You Expect Us to Read, Too? Rrrrghh

Magazines have a lot of words in them. The question posed to you today--the first day without Michael Jackson--is: How many of those words do you read? And, if you can't read, there's an answer in there for you, too. (Click it, we dare you. But then we'll know your secret.) … MORE
The Making of Dan Winters' 'Periodical Photographs'

The Making of Dan Winters' 'Periodical Photographs'

In late 2007, I received a life-changing phone call from one of my best friends, a photographer named Dan Winters. He and I had become inseparable collaborators nearly 10 years ago, after a summer afternoon spent photographing (and gorging on) a particularly fine crop of Texas Hill Country peaches. Since then, we've worked together nearly every month in some form or fashion, both during my tenure at Texas Monthly, and now at WIRED.

Photojournalism Q&A with Michele McNally of the NY Times

Michele McNally is the Managing Editor at The New York Times overseeing all the photography commissioned for and used in the paper -- everything from the front page color spot selection to the photo use throughout the sections and reporting pages.

Read on for more on her Q&A this week where she's answering any and all questions about the business of photography and photo editing... it's pretty great to see, especially when she gets into what happened to "the good old days".

The Newsweek Redesign: Hit or Miss?

We all know what the process is like to get out a massive redesign. The meetings... The designs... Presentations... Focus groups... More designs... Launch.

Well, it has been four issues for the Newsweek redesign by Number 17--a good number of issues to get your sea-legs.

Face-Off

Face-Off

I annoy my husband, Steve, to no end with my compulsion for the need to name all fonts that pass by my way...on menus, in movie titles, on advertisements. If he were in the design field, I guess it could turn out to be some friendly competition. But no, he's a Captain in the FDNY, and couldn't give a rat's arse about a TYPEFACE. If it weren't for his use of his own (gasp) Dell laptop, he would never have even heard of (another gasp) Times Roman and Arial.

Alas, my email updates from ArtBistro.com arrived with a link to a Designer's joy. For all you type gurus out there; or just lovers of all things with characters (or just a character yourself), see how savvy you really are. And enjoy the company of all those other typoholics. (Aren't there support meetings for us?) Test your type IQ here.
