With breathtaking efficiency, People Magazine produces not only the weekly magazine, but 12 one-shot special newsstand and subscriber issues including People Country throughout the year; books, special design projects and prototype product launches are also part of the mix. We cover extraordinarily broad range of topics including breaking news and human interest, gossip, celebrity and hero profiles, fashion, food, entertainment, crime and beauty. People is looking for a dynamic and autonomous Deputy Design Director to deliver meaningful visual content to an audience of more than 43 million readers. The candidate will assist in executing the look and feel of our brand, and work closely with the design director to package exciting, compelling content across People's print and digital products. The candidate must be a confident, curious, self-starter, prepared to lead the art direction of select special packages and one-shots - and calmly guide a design assistant in the execution. We want a leader who collaborates: the Deputy Design Director co-manages a team of 10+ staff and freelance art directors, works with the production director and iPad teams to coordinate and manage scheduling, and assists the team on tight deadlines. This position coordinates with the co-Deputy Design Director on coverage for the Design Director, designs covers in her absence, and must be ready to step in at a moment's notice to run the show.
We are looking for a killer designer who is outspoken, sensitive, problem-solving, educated, good with writing lines and editing copy when needed, punctual, enthusiastic and approachable; an articulate teacher and responsive listener. Though no human is without ego, the ideal candidate checks theirs at the door and looks for clever and effective ways to achieve both visual greatness and mass-consumer approachability without sacrificing integrity or taste.
Anyone considering applying for this job must submit a portfolio (online preferred) tailored to the type of content we cover and a letter with something about yourself along with your CV in order to be considered for an interview. If you're in consideration for the job, expect a design test, and you'll be asked to submit a few written recommendations from your previous employers or colleagues.
