Assistant Art Director

The Assistant Art Director will primarily work to create layouts/other supporting visual materials and production duties to share compelling storytelling for Science News magazine, website, and various electronic editions. The Assistant Art Director may also perform artistic and production work for the Marketing team when needed. This is a fast-paced newsroom environment where staff members need exceptional attention to detail. Responsibilities: Research and prepare art and graphics for articles in multiple formats; Graphics creation, including editing/adapting existing material to Science News style and custom infographics; Create print layouts for magazine; Assist in producing specialized web graphics; Oversee the reformat of issues into electronic versions; Perform production duties including optimizing images, reviewing pages for press, and formatting text-only document of issues; Create print proofs of pages for press; Handle permissions, licensing and rights of images, including completing check requests and tracking image rights information; Other duties as assigned

Graphic Designer

Science News, the award-winning print and digital magazine of Society for Science & the Public, is seeking a hard-working and talented graphic designer. This position will primarily work with the art director, design director and editors to create layouts and other supporting visual materials for Science News magazine, website and electronic editions. The graphic designer will be a key contributor to the design team and editorial team by creating compelling graphics and visuals for story-telling in print and on the web. The graphic designer will also perform artistic and production work for the marketing team when needed. Responsibilities: -Work with editors to research and prepare art and graphics for articles in multiple formats -Create graphics, including editing/adapting existing material to Science News style and custom infographics -Create print layouts for magazine -Assist art directors and web producer in producing specialized web graphics -Reformat issues into electronic versions including iPad and Kindle -Perform production duties including optimizing images, reviewing pages for press, and formatting text-only document of issues -Layout and prepare advertisements for press -Create print proofs of pages for press -Handle permissions, licensing and rights of images, including completing check requests and tracking image rights information in spreadsheets -Support to Marketing team design projects -Other duties as assigned
