SECOND PLACE
RAUL AGUILA
UNIVERSITY School of Visual Arts
YEAR Senior
PROFESSOR Jeff Glendenning
CATEGORY Entertainment

What was your inspiration in creating your entry?
Aside from listening to Daft Punk's music, observing words they choose, the range of sound and rhythm they create. My inspiration in creating the entry was examining the semiotics of space and technology.

What was the biggest challenge in creating this entry?
The biggest challenge was to translate Daft Punk's futuristic world of multilayered electronic music into flat form. With that as my basis, the key challenge in creating the piece was to find the right composition by balancing graphic elements whilst sustaining the integrity of the photograph.

What was your inspiration in creating this third-place entry?
From a deck of cards that I had lying around. I always liked its graphic quality; the ornate details, the stoic faces, the typography. I thought it was appropriate for Jack Black.

What was the biggest challenge in creating this entry?
Fusing Jack Black with the Jack card was the most difficult task. In my revisions, Jack's face ranged from being too subtle, too unnoticeable to looking completely isolated from the playing card.

Do you participate in any publication- or design-related campus activities?
I interned at a contemporary art magazine, Art Asia Pacific, and I am a student member of AIGA and SPD.

What are your favorite magazines?
My favorite magazines come from different areas; Esquire, GQ, Wired, GOOD, New York Times, New York Magazine, Esopus, IDN, COLORS, T Style, W, Monocle, to name a few...

What do you want to do while in New York for your internship?
Gain experiences.
