Good Cents

Good Cents

The Lincoln penny has a new verso, only the third since its introduction in 1909. I made a line-up of our legal tender and was surprised by what I saw; a brief history of the American economy as writ by the U.S. Mint.

Rare Specimen No.9: Don't Run In Socks

Rare Specimen No.9: Don't Run In Socks

I just loves me some good old school illustration gorgeousness. And there's no other illustrator who makes my toes curl quite like Milton Glaser. Therefore, I found myself sifting through my classical record albums over the weekend (silence those guffaws, please) and I came across this lil' honey of an illustration job that Glaser did, back in the 70's (fact checking that). You all know he'd done a whole bunch of lovely album covers, and I knew I had one, I just had to hunt it down. After that, I skittered across the hardwood floor in my socks to a book shelf where I'd stashed an old book Glaser did the cover art for, that I'd bought for a buck at a neighbor's tag sale a year ago. Grabbed it, and then limped over to another bookshelf (acquired sudden back spasm during that prior sock-on-wood move) and … MORE
The Hunt for Indian Movie Posters

The Hunt for Indian Movie Posters

"HA HA HA, I got them now!" I shouted into a cardboard tube smelling of India and printer chemicals that contained possibly one of the coolest ideas I've come up with! My very own Indian movie poster -- advertising myself and my good friend-slash-freelance partner Dawn Szombathy.

Cool Hunting

Cool Hunting

When I was 9 years old, my uncle gave me a stamp collector's starter kit. I remember this moment clearly because it was the first time I was introduced to graphic design, and although I didn't know it at the time, this hobby kick-started my obsession with typography and image making. Collecting these "little posters" became a visceral thrill, and a precursor to what would become my love for page design. … MORE
Capturing Hand Painted Signs In the North

Capturing Hand Painted Signs In the North

It's kind of like trying to tie your shoe while finding your way through a fun house at a county fair.
Recently, I was invited to go on a business trip for my sister's fashion line to Northern India. We visited factories and markets that specialize in tie-and-dye, buttons, lace, silk, embroidery and block printing. Seeing the whole process first hand made me really appreciate the work that artisans in India do. This also gave me the opportunity to be in narrow lanes and small districts that tourist don't visit.

Bangalore Bounty

Bangalore Bounty

From my one of my favorite interns:

What can be seen through a crowd of millions in a rapidly developing city in India? Really cool design! When my sister asked me to move to Bangalore, India for six months to work on the graphic design end of branding a few of her businesses, I jumped at the chance. Though stressful at times, working here has been a rewarding experience. Business is definitely handled in a different way and design seems to be divided into two worlds. One world is hand-made while the other is digitally produced.

Report from Denver

Report from Denver

Attending a political party convention for the first time for any political junkie is an exciting and unpredictable experience. SPD being the non-partisan organization that it needs to be, I promised Emily I would stay away from politics, and only try to report compelling examples of graphics and design on display.

Fifty Pence

Fifty Pence

I came across this newly minted Fifty Pence coin while cycling through Wales and was excited by the interest in the origins of words. The coin is roughly the size of the US Quarter, but unlike our relatively new State Quarters which use imagery to describe each state, I appreciated the attention paid to the written, typed word with this quote from Johnson's Dictionary 1755. On this small coin the designer managed to fit the word's pronunciation, origin and part of speech. Pretty nifty, fifty. As pictures are increasingly the international language, it is refreshing to find a dictionary quote on this UK coin. And hey, who can name this typeface?
Road Trip!

Road Trip!

I was tolerated (barely, I think, but with love!) on a recent road trip through Utah, when I insisted on backtracking to get this photo of the Thunderbird sign. What better combo of old-school roadside neon AND an opportunity to gawk at a truly unfortunate, permanent grammar mistake?
HO-MADE PIES ?!
I love it.
