Pub(lications) Crawled 2014!

Pub(lications) Crawled 2014!

This was one of the best New York trips our group has ever experienced. Organized, informational and just AWESOME!

That is just one of many comments we received about our 2014 Pub(lications) Crawl event last Friday, September 19. A huge thanks to all of you who joined us for this day-long event touring magazine/publishing art departments. If you missed it, never fear! We've got a few more smaller events planned for later this fall and spring, and then of course, there's always next year.

I loved that every one was so nice ... also the handouts and free goodies. I thought it was a special treat since I could read some of the material on the way back home. They're also good tools at comparing and looking at my own work and seeing what I need to improve or embellish on.

We also want to extend a SUPER-HUGE thanks to our wonderful tour hosts: Bloomberg Businessweek, Esquire, Martha Stewart Living, More, Sports Illustrated, Travel + Leisure and 29th Street Publishing

Being able to tour such well-known magazine firms was very inspirational and felt like a privilege.

Check out some more images from the day on our Facebook page.

50th-Small.jpgAs you can see on the homepage, SPD is celebrating our 50th Anniversary! And while SPD has been honoring professional editorial design work since its inception, the first Student Competition wasn't held until 1994 with the winning pieces published in the Pub 30 annual. In the beginning, the Student Competition was more like our current SPD-U Spotlight Online Gallery Show, where it highlighted the best work being done by students over the past year.

Last week, we showed you the top Gold and Silver Winners from that first competition. This week we're showing the Merit Winners from that year (including illustration and photography pieces). Look for the next year's winners next week, as well as the start of our interview series with some of the past winning designers. But for now, click through to see the rest of 1994's winning student work...

50th-Small.jpgAs you may have noticed over on the SPD homepage, we're celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year as an organization!

Today, we're taking a look back at those original winners and each week we'll showcase the following year's Student Competition winners until we're caught up with this past year's winning designs. And along the way, we'll also be adding interviews and profiles with some of these award-winning student designers to see where they ended up.

And of course, we'll be announcing the official rules and Call for Entries for THIS year's competition in the weeks to come. But for now, click through to see the winning student work of 1994...
