Could You Use Some Scholarship Money?

We're not the only ones offering scholarship money for publication design students (missed this year's Student Design Competition? Details for next year's will be available late summer/early fall) ... the Society for News Design is offering a $2,000 scholarship to "a deserving student interested in and showing promise for pursuing a career in visual journalism."  And just because "News Design" is in their name doesn't mean you have to be designing newspapers ... visual journalism comes in many forms, including newspaper, magazines, websites and other interactive media forms. Check out all the details here. But hurry, the deadline is June 12.
iPad: Not Just for the Professionals

iPad: Not Just for the Professionals

Think designing for Apple's new iPad is only for the professionals at this point? Think again, slackers ... your fellow students are diving in as well.

Abilene Christian University's student newspaper, The Optimist, has become the first student newspaper to publish on Apple's iPad device. (Not to mention that they've had an iPhone app since 2007). Check out their awesome efforts here:

Read more about it here.

So how about you and your school? Does your college paper or magazine have a mobile app? Are you working on any iPad designs on your own?

If You Can't Come Friday...

Registration for Friday's Pub(lications) Crawl office tours event closed last night, so if you missed it or just couldn't make it Friday regardless, don't worry ... we repeat the event every fall and spring, so you'll have a chance again this coming September.

In the meantime, take some virtual office tours. Folio: magazine visited the offices of Complex magazine and Consumer Reports. And Inc. magazine recently ditched their offices ... read about their experience as a virtual office here . Our Pub Crawl tours focus on the art and design departments on the magazines and companies we visit, but any tour will give you some insight into what the real world is actually like.

Only A Few Hours Left to Sign Up for Friday's Pub Crawl!

Registration for Friday's Pub(lication) Crawl event ends tonight at 11:30, so make sure you reserve/buy your ticket now. Remember if you're a student member, entry is free! Find out more here.
