#TBT: SPD-U Throws it Back to 2008 Student Competition Winner Jason Sfetko

50th-Small.jpgAs part of SPD's 50th Anniversary celebration, we're looking back at our past Student Competition winners (see galleries of past winning work here on the blog). A few of them were kind enough to speak with us about what they've been up to since their wins and how the competition affected them.

In 2008 as part of our 10th Student CompetitionJason Sfetko won First Honorable Mention for his work as a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology under instructor Chris Lyons (see Jason's award-winning work here).

Jason's competition win earned him an internship at Martha Stewart Living magazine. From there, he worked at Complex, Tennis Magazine and then as a designer at GQ. He's now at the New York Times Magazine where we caught up with him for a few quick words...

As we celebrate SPD's 50th Anniversary and to get prepared for THIS year's competition, we're going back in time to showcase all the past Student Competition winners. (Get details on this year's competition here.)

Back in the beginning, the competition was more like the professional competition in that it honored the best work being done by students from the past year. Starting with the 6th competition in 2000, we started giving an assignment and students created entries specifically for our competition.

Last week, we showcased the top winners from the 2012 competition. And today we're highlighting all the winners from 2013. This is the 15th Student Competition...

Special SPD-U Mini Pub(lications) Crawl: Friday, Feb. 13

Special SPD-U Mini Pub(lications) Crawl: Friday, Feb. 13

As you may know, we do a big office-tour event every fall called the Pub(lications) Crawl where students get the inside scoop at various magazines here in NYC. While the main event is only held in the fall, this spring we are doing a few smaller mini-tours, and we're excited to announce the first one ...

On Friday, February 13, we'll visit the offices of 9Threads Custom Publishing. Award-winning creative directors Nancy Campbell and Trevett McCandliss will give you a special tour and presentation of their offices and work, giving you a sneak peek into how publications get made and how creative photo shoots and designs happen in the real world. Learn more about them here.

This is an exclusive small tour that has room for only 10 students. Registration has closed early as all 10 spots are now full. Look for more special events like this to come in the next few months. Registration is open now to all students, but SPD Student Members get priority registration through midnight Friday, Feb. 6. (If you're not already a member, consider joining now to get FREE access to this event as well as 3 FREE entries in our upcoming Student Design Competition.)

Student Design Competition Q&A: Who Exactly Is Eligible?

Q.jpgSomewhere in your rules and FAQs, I saw something about having to be a student at an undergraduate institution in order to enter your Student Design Competition. What does that mean exactly?

Are community college/2-year college students eligible? What about grad school? Continuing ed? High School students? Or what if I just graduated this past December? Can I still enter this year's competition?
